THE HANDLOOM WEAVING CHALLENGE
Creating a lumbar cushion on a traditional handloom requires different setup and technique than weaving square cushions. The pattern must flow horizontally across 36 inches, maintaining visual coherence from end to end.
This requires:
- Wider loom setup (accommodating the 36" width)
- Extended weaving time (more width = more shuttle throws)
- Consistent tension across the entire width
- Pattern planning that works horizontally
A weaver spends 8-10 hours creating one lumbar cover—longer than a square cushion because the extended width requires more shuttle passes, more careful tension management, and more physical space at the loom.
THE DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Lumbar cushions work because they break visual monotony. Square cushions cluster. Lumbar cushions anchor. They create horizontal lines that balance vertical elements in a room (lamps, plants, bookcases).
